Sea Glass is a light weight, carefree, shawl edged with lacy pineapples that roll and crest just like the waves of the sea.

The entire shawl is worked sideways with the edging worked at the same time. Shorter stitches along the top edge give the shawl a slightly crescent shape which allows it to drape beautifully around the neckline.

This crochet pattern calls for approximately 2 skeins of Midknit Cravings Sugar (Silver/Gold) 115 g (4.05 ounces)/388 meters (425 yards) per skein, a 3.25 mm (D) crochet hook, and a yarn needle. caron cakes yarn review...

Caron took the fiber world by storm with the introduction of "Caron Cakes", their new and delicious gradient yarn. Prior to the release of this new yarn, at Michaels stores across North America, gradient cakes were something that you only saw in high end yarn stores. As soon as pictures of the new Caron Cakes started to grace the web, I was instantly intrigued and I wondered how this box store gradient yarn would measure up.

In a nut shell...I loved it! It was a fun and affordable way to try something new and exciting. Caron Cakes yarn is 20% wool, so it had no where near the plastic feel of many acrylics, plus the colourways are amazing. Soft and squishy, the Caron Cakes also boast a generous yardage of 350 meters (383 yards), which is more than enough to complete your basic crochet project. The Mostly Harmless pictured was completed with just one cake of Cookies and Cream.

The only really negative thing that I had to say about Caron Cakes would be about the abrupt colour changes. It would have been nice to see a more gradual colour change, but at this price point I don't think that it's really worth complaining about. Besides, if you find the colour change bothersome, the yardage is generous enough to fasten off at the end of a row/round and then start the next round with the new colour.

finished project - seafoam shawl.

I've been eyeing up this one skein of Blue Heron Rayon Metallic in my yarn stash for some time now. Although, I tend to stick to more neutral colours I was drawn to this gorgeous colour way, and I've been pondering for a while now about what to make with it. I'm not a big fan of colour pooling so I was looking for a quick, lacy project that would really show off the yarn. I finally decided on the Seafoam Shawl by Kimberly K. McAlindin. Not only did I love the pattern, but it also turned out to be a great match for the yarn.

I thoroughly enjoyed crocheting with this yarn as it is amazingly soft, and not at all itchy, which is unlike most metallic yarns. Also, the drape is simply delicious! I used a 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook and if you compare my shawl to the original you will notice that I didn't follow gauge....ooops. I really should of taken the time to work out a test swatch as I would have preferred my finished project to have turned out a bit bigger. Totally my fault, but  in the end it is a nice size for a scarf. To open up the stitches and to stretch it out a bit, I lightly steamed blocked the shawl/scarf when it was done.

My oldest daughter wanted to make a shawl and since I'm a big fan of crochet designer, Bernadette Ambergen, I directed her to Bernadette's crochet patterns. Bernadette has a beautiful collection of crochet shawl patterns to choose from so it was hard deciding. In the end she went with Wisteria, and this is her finished project. Isn't it gorgeous?

 

 

Unfortunately, I the yarn was unmarked, so the only yarn details that I can give you is that it is a sea foam green cotton.

 

 

 

 

So inspiring....but sadly neither Tara or I will have a much time for hook and yarn this month :( Don't despair we still have plans for you!!!

marigold mile.

A couple of months ago I released a crochet pattern for a scarf/shawl called the "Marigold Mile". The name for the shawl was inspired by the long rows of pretty orange and yellow flowers that fill many of our meridians during the months of summer. At the time of the patterns release I had wanted to include a picture of the flowers, but it was still to early in the year. Now, that the flowers are in full bloom I thought that I would take the opportunity to share a picture of what has been dubbed by our city as the Marigold Mile...

Where I live it has been a tradition to remove the grass in some of the meridians and in its place to plant marigolds, the city's official flower. Although we use the metric system in Canada the long rows of orange flowers has been dubbed the Marigold Mile.

As I was working on this pattern and watching the colours emerge to form a pretty swirling design it reminded me of our meridians, jam packed with orange coloured blossoms, and I knew that "Marigold Mile" would be the perfect name! 

 

The yarn that I chose for this project is Blue Heron Bamboo Lace which is comprised of 100% bamboo. I made this shawl using Knit Picks Aloft which is a lovely lace weight blend of 75% mohair and 25% silk. I am extremely happy with this soft, pretty yarn as it blocks beautifully and it is very similar to the Rowan Kidsilk Haze but at a fraction of the cost. 

The downside of mohair is that it is usually impossible to frog and the Knit Picks Aloft was no exception. I messed up on the shawl border as there is suppose to be a scallop on either side of the center point as opposed to one scallop in the very center. I managed to rip out about half a dozen shells before I gave up and realized that I would end up wrecking the shawl if I tried to take out anymore.  Besides the edging looked just as pretty either way.

Once again...yay to Knit Picks for their gorgeous selection of affordable luxury yarns!!!
